Mission of SYLC

Mission of SYLC

Scarborough Youth Lacrosse Club (“SYLC”) is a non-profit corporation and is currently affiliated with Massachusetts Youth Lacrosse (“MYL”). MYL serves as the governing body responsible for overseeing, administering, and supporting lacrosse competition and mission-based programming for participating City and Town programs throughout the state of Maine.

The Code of Conduct establishes the minimum standards and expectations for all individuals participating in MYL sanctioned activities for players and their parents or guardians

MYL promotes positive coaching, good sportsmanship, at all levels. This “Code of Conduct” is a vital requirement for maintaining membership in MYL for Board Members/Volunteers, Employees, Program Volunteers, Officials, Coaches, Parents, Players, and Spectators.

Mission:

The SYLC mission is to provide a lacrosse program for boys and girls in grades Pre-K though 8 inclusive, from the town of Scarborough. SYLC emphasizes the ideals of good sportsmanship and conduct while also instilling a spirit of team play and camaraderie.

Philosophy:

SYLC believes in the development of all players, regardless of size, ability or skill levels. SYLC is an inclusive organization open to all Scarborough residents where, collectively, we strive to provide a safe, enjoyable learning experience for all participants in a supportive environment. All teams will be evenly balanced and playing time will be weighted equally (i.e. equal playing time) through 6th grade. Teams will be based on a player’s current grade level: 7/8 (7th & 8th graders), 5/6 (5th & 6th graders), 3/4 (3rd & 4th graders) & 1/2 (1st & 2nd graders).  There are NO ‘A’ or ‘B’ or ‘stacked’ teams, nor standings or playoffs, at any level.

Goals:

Our primary goal is for all players, coaches, parents, officials & program leaders to have a fun, rewarding experience while always demonstrating sportsmanship on & off the field as together we learn, share & teach the fundamental skills and teamwork required to play the game well.  Our common objective is for more children to enjoy youth lacrosse at all levels.

Nichemis

Nichemis

Long before lacrosse was played by today's athletes, the local Native American Abenaki tribe played lacrosse in “Owascoag, the land of tall grass,” which is the area we now call Scarborough. The Abenaki word “Nichemis” translates as “little brother,” “little sister” or “younger than I.” Nichemis is embraced by SYLC as a tribute to the history of the game of lacrosse.

The spirit of Nichemis includes:

  • Giving time and effort selflessly to others

  • Giving back to the community and the game of lacrosse

  • Being role models and mentors to younger players

Scarborough Youth Lacrosse Club teaches the Nichemis philosophy to all of our players so they will learn that they have an opportunity and responsibility to give back their knowledge, enthusiasm, and lessons learned from the game to younger players. Many graduates of the SYLC program come back to help coach teams. Our Scarborough High School Girls and Boys Red Storm teams take great pride in attending practices to lead and engage their “little brothers and sisters” on the lacrosse field. Many of our volunteer coaches are former SYLC and SHS players.
